According to the basic principles, every thing in this universe is made up of 5 basic eternal elements –AIR, ETHER, FIRE, WATER & EARTH. These elements are also responsible for the formation of human body. Here they combine in a specific way, resulting in the evolution of three energies. They are called VATHA, PITHA and KAPHA. These energies are collectively called Tridoshas.
These energies - Thridoshas - control all physical, physiological, anatomical, mental, and spiritual functions of the body. Each and every functions in our body are influenced by these energies.
So whenever the equilibrium of the functions of these energies is affected, it leads to a disease. And when the energies are in perfect balance, the body also functions perfectly, exhibiting a perfect three-dimensional health.
Health in ayurveda can be explained as a state of perfect equilibrium of the functions of the Tridoshas and associated factors, leading to the well being of the physical, mental, spiritual and social aspects of an individual. Such a person is called “SWASTHA”
Ayurveda has 8 branches, hence called ASHTANGA VEDA. They are Kaya chikitsa (general medicine), Bala chikitsa( pediatrics), Graha chikitsa( psychiatry), Urdhanga chikitsa(ENT), Salya chikitsa(surgery), Visha chikitsa(toxicology), Rasayana chikitsa(rejuvenation therapy), Vajeekarana chikitsa( aphrodisiac therapy). These specialities prevailed thousands of years ago are still a wonder to the modern world.
